All,

I feel that the most appropriate adjustment for the midterm is to change the marking scheme to allow the mark on the final to replace the mark on the midterm if it is higher.

We will vote on this change in class on Thursday and Friday.

I have heard from some of you that the number of marks was too high. The midterm is worth 20% of the final mark, regardless of how many marks it itself was worth. The number of marks was to give sufficient granularity in marking (and in some ways an assessment with more marks works in you favour since it can mean fewer marks are deducted for small errors). Thus there would have been no essential difference had the midterm been worth, say, 20 marks instead of 196.

I also feel that the long question 3 was quite similar to the long question on the practice problem set, which I specifically advised everyone to pay attention to in advance of the test.

Also my office hours today will start shortly, and I will work on responding to all of your e-mails!

Please let me know if you have any questions --
