All,

I have scheduled the make-up test and given this information to everyone who is approved to take it. If you believe you should be taking it but have not received the time from me, please contact me immediately.

I hope that you have had a good break. This week's homework assignment is now available here. It will be due next Tuesday (July 14) at 3.30 PM EDT, as usual. I apologise for not getting it out on Saturday as usual but hope it should not be too hard now that we are all experts at applying the Cauchy integral formula!

It has come to my attention that after switching from quizzes to homework assignments, I never specified clearly what materials you are and are not allowed to use in solving the homework. Obviously the standard injunctions against plagiarism hold. The following is additional clarification applicable from hereon out; please read it carefully as I will expect you to hold to it:

All work submitted as solutions to homework must be your own individual work. I recognise that the use of online resources makes a positive contribution to the learning of many of you, and I do not want to interdict that. On the other hand, there are a few things you are specifically NOT allowed to do:

-- Post homework problems to another website. (This was specifically forbidden in the original syllabus; see bottom of p. 4. Course material is the intellectual property of the instructors, and such posting is also a violation of intellectual property rights.)

-- Perform internet searches to try to find solutions to problems either on or substantially similar to those on the homework.

-- Perform internet searches to try to find 'hints' to help you solve the homework problems. (This includes looking for similar types of problems.) The problems I assign can be done with just knowledge from the prerequisite classes, the lecture notes, and the textbook.

Many years ago I reviewed a paper a friend of mine had submitted as coursework which I felt (perhaps unfairly) had more or less been cobbled together from online resources. While this may be appropriate in some circumstances (assuming the resources are carefully cited, of course!), it is totally inappropriate for the homework assignments in this course. If you do not understand every step of your solution, and how the logic proceeds from the question to the answer, you have not really solved the problem. The point of the homework assignments is to work out the solutions for yourself, possibly after discussions with other students in the class and assistance from the instructors or TAs.

If any of you have questions about anything in the foregoing, please ask me!

I am aiming to have midterm test marks back by Thursday. It was recently brought to my attention that there is a registration deadline of some sort (relating to wait lists?) on Wednesday of which I was not previously aware; unfortunately I cannot guarantee return of the test marks before this deadline. On the other hand we have already returned 30% of your final course mark in the quizzes and homework, so that should provide something of a basis to go on. If anyone would like to discuss your current progress feel free to contact me.

Classes and tutorials will start up this week as usual. I will put out an announcement about office hours a bit later on.

Please let me know if you have any further questions!
