All,

For convenience, I have compiled all of my course notes into one large file here.

Some comments about the midterm:

-- The test will have clearly delineated times for writing and for scanning/uploading. The specifics will be stated in the test itself. As with the quizzes, it is an academic offense to continue writing during the scanning/uploading time.

-- I have received many inquiries concerning the number of problems which will be on the test. I haven't actually written the test yet so I can't answer; but since I would count the long problem on the midterm as one problem, and the short problems also as one problem each, the number of problems is not necessarily the most useful thing to know about the length of the test.

-- As I mentioned in class, prior to giving you the test I will write out the whole thing myself to see how long it takes. I have not done this with the review problems.

-- Remember that on the test you are ONLY allowed to use the following resources: (i) lecture notes from Matt and myself; (ii) notes you have written yourself prior to the test; (iii) the course textbook. (i) includes information posted in announcements, as well as solutions to practice problems, quizzes, and assignments posted on the course webpage, but does NOT include information on Piazza. (ii) only includes notes you have actually written out yourself; it does not include screenshots of work written by others.

-- You are not allowed to use any other resources. This includes, without limitation:

-- -- It is an academic offense to give anyone else access to your test questions (for example, by posting them online) at any point during the test, or at any point after the test until your marks are returned. It is also an academic offense to copy or otherwise use answers found online in your submission, with or without attribution. Anyone found violating these restrictions will receive a 0 on the entire test and may also be subject to additional penalties.

-- -- It is also an academic offense to discuss the test with anyone else unless both of you have already completed and submitted your final answers. Since some of you will be writing the test at different times, please do not discuss it with anyone until after 10.00 PM EDT Tuesday evening.

-- -- You are not allowed to use any online search engine (Google, DuckDuckGo, Wikipedia, Baidu, etc.) at any point during the test, regardless of the purpose. This includes looking up standard definitions or theorems. If you wish to view the lecture notes or course textbook from the website during the test, please make sure you have these bookmarked as this prohibition extends to searching for them during the test as well.

-- -- You are not allowed to use Piazza at any point during the test. This includes looking up previous posts.

-- -- If you have any questions regarding anything in the foregoing, please let me know as soon as possible.

Please note that the foregoing are simply explanations and clarifications of what was already laid out in the syllabus at the start of term.

I will be adding some material to the midterm review sheet (explanations, rather than problems!) in the next half hour or so, and may add additional material later on in the day.

Please let me know if you have any further questions! Also remember that I have office hours today at 2.00 PM and tomorrow morning at 9.00 AM. Tomorrow morning's office hour will be the last one until classes resume in July, though if anyone would like to talk with me during the break feel free to send me an e-mail to schedule a time.
