All,

Lecture notes for Thursday's lecture are available here. They go a bit beyond what we talked about on Thursday to some things we will take up next Tuesday. I have also made some additions to the notes for Tuesday's lecture. Finally, I felt it would be convenient to have some basic definitions all together in one place; that document is here and will be updated periodically throughout the class. (It is a searchable PDF document, so if you are ever unsure of a particular term you can start by searching there.)

I would like to clarify a couple things about the quizzes:

-- The directions for the quiz state, "You have 10 minutes to complete your work and then 5 minutes to complete the upload." While perhaps not as clear as it could have been, "and then" means that these periods are to be taken up sequentially: you may take up to 10 minutes to write the quiz, but once you move on to the submission phase, your writing time is over. You are not allowed to write, submit something, then go back to correct what you wrote in the first place. I know some of you are concerned that you will get locked out if you do not submit early; since I am accepting e-mailed submissions in case something goes wrong on Quercus I do not feel this is a reason to change the policy.

-- Please remember that, as stated in the syllabus, your mark on the term test will replace your mark on a quiz only when your work on that quiz was a 'serious attempt'. Failing to write the quiz is not a 'serious attempt', unless you are excused for medical or other reasons. Thus missing a quiz without being excused means that you will get a 0 for that quiz mark with no possibility of improving it later on. (In case I just spooked anyone out, all I am really saying is: You need to actually take the quizzes! The point of allowing a mark on the term test to compensate for a low quiz mark is to encourage improvement during the term, not procrastination.)

I will put some practice problems out later on today and try to get solutions together by sometime Tuesday morning. I will also post rubrics for the quizzes for each section here. (If your rubric isn't there, it means the marking isn't finished for your section; if the rubric is there and you don't have a mark, please contact me as soon as possible.) In the meantime, I hope everyone has a good Victoria Day, and see you all on Tuesday!

Let me know if you have any questions!
