(First of all, this announcement is being sent on purpose to both sections. The administrative information in it is applicable to everyone. For those of you who are in LEC0101, a couple items: I have updated the textbook typescript, so it now includes Graphs, and also includes a lot of what we will discuss next week. You are also welcome to reference my lecture notes, though they do not cover quite the same ground as Matt's lectures. And don't worry, I am keeping a close eye on what is going on in both sections to be sure that the quizzes are fair!)
Now on to the main points: I have posted some practice problems related to the material we covered in class this week here.
The quiz in tutorials this coming week will be on material similar to that covered in these practice questions, along with the review problems. The precise questions will be different for different tutorials (those of you who have tutorials on Thursday and Friday will have seen more material by the time of your quiz than those of you who have tutorials on Tuesday and Wednesday, though since it will still be new I won't expect you to have mastered it by any means!). Going forwards, I will post practice problem sets each week (I will do my best to post them earlier in the week in the future to give you more time to study!) which will indicate the areas from which quiz questions might be drawn.
I have not yet set the exact problems for this week's quiz, but I anticipate it will take from 10--15 minutes (the exact length will be announced before tutorials start and will also be indicated clearly in the quiz), after which there will be a 5 minute window to submit. (Since there are no parallel tutorials, I hope that having everyone in one section submitting in the same 5 minute window will not be too much strain on the system.) If you are unable to submit within the window, you should e-mail your solution to me as soon as possible. This week's quiz will be administered on Quercus; you will be given a randomly selected question from a pool, and then you will need to write out your solution and upload a picture. Please try to make the picture file as small as possible as otherwise the downloading time can significantly increase the time to mark -- which means we don't have as much time to give you feedback! I would prefer you write the answer on paper and take a picture instead of writing on a tablet and submitting it that way; if you have concerns about this please let me know. (If there are enough people who really want to write it on a tablet I may reconsider.)
The quiz will be at the end of the tutorial, so that you have time during tutorial to ask questions.
I think there was something else I was supposed to tell you which I forgot. Oh well, if it was important it may very well be forced to become unimportant by my forgetting it!
Finally, when I reviewed the recording from Thursday's lecture I discovered that one particular student's webcam was on the entire time, quite possibly without that student's realising it. I would like to assure everyone that I took great lengths to delete any personal visual information from the recording before sending it out to the few students who have an attendance exemption! -- so I don't think anyboyd's accidentally shared webcam went to anyone else. Just be careful in the future!
Apologies for the long message. Please let me know if you have any questions!
Nathan
