All,

After a careful consideration of the options for compensating for the midterm marks, I have come to the following decisions:

-- There will be no make-up assessment specifically for the midterm. Instead, I will scale the marks as follows: questions 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 will be rescaled to be out of 9.5, 9, 9.5, 10, and 13 marks instead of 10, 10, 10, 20, and 15 marks, respectively, while question 3 will not be adjusted; this means that the entire test will be out of 56 marks instead of 70 marks. Those who scored higher than 56 will receive the additional marks as extra credit (the term test is worth 28% of the final mark, so if a student received, say, 70 marks (no-one did, but just as an example), which corresponds to 70/56 = 125%, he or she would receive 28% * 1.25 = 35% of the final course mark for the term test). (This is a mark adjustment and hence does not require us to take a vote tomorrow.)

-- I propose the following adjustment to the marking scheme as laid out in the syllabus: instead of the best eight quizzes (out of total number given) counting towards the final mark, there will be a definite number of 10 quizzes, with the best eight out of the first nine counting, and the final quiz (which will be on August 6) counting as extra credit. Please let me know if you have any comments about this suggestion; I plan to have the vote on it in class tomorrow (as I mentioned last Thursday).

While checking the question-by-question breakdown, I discovered that I had miscalculated the total mark for three of you. I have updated the mark with a corresponding note. If you have any concerns please let me know (but if you have your test paper you should start by checking the marks I wrote inside it first).

Unfortunately I am running behind (again...) so the solutions to the final are not yet ready but will be as soon as possible.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Nathan
