All,
The syllabus is now online here. It is slightly different than the provisional version (mostly because I added some more information about what I expect to do in class and what I want you to do to prepare before class), but the marking scheme hasn't changed.
I also tried to clarify what I meant by 'completed': basically I want to see that you at least attempted each of the (required) problems on the assignment. If you run into a problem which you have no idea how to solve, you should come talk to me or Dmitri during our office hours, or around class or tutorial time. If even after all that you still have no idea how to start, please at least write something relevant (for example, definitions of key terms, or things that you thought of that didn't work).
That being said, I expect you to make an honest effort -- please do not try to game the system by feigning ignorance!
Today in class we will be talking about material from Chapter 0 (particularly sections 0.1.2, 0.1.5, 0.2, and 0.3), as well as some material from Chapter 2 (mostly 2.1), as motivation before we dive into the rather involved material in Chapter 1 (which I anticipate taking up next week).
See you all in class!
Nathan
